A simple comic creator you might like

Hi all, I had a great chance to connect with a range of application makers at a recent event at Google. Little by little I'll share some of the applications and environments they are working on. Here's a simple comic creator that kids find easy to jump into. It's called Bitstrips:

Passing on a great Happy Birthday note to the Internet!

Opinion: Happy 40th birthday, Internet! by Cathy N. Davidson (Reblogged from) Cosmos Online In 1969 a UCLA team sent the first message over ARPANET, the computer network that later became known as the Internet. Since then it has fundamentally changed humanity. That event, which took place on 29 October 1969, is celebrated today as the moment the Internet was born. It ushered in… Continue

Notion of digital divide changes when you add mobile internet

The Pew Research Center has released a new survey report that shows African-Americans accessing the Internet with a mobile device at twice the national average. This was part of a general trend (which will not surprise TLs) where mobile internet use has “increased sharply.” The report surveyed 2,253 American adults. Thirty-two percent reported using a cell phone or smartphone to access the Internet — up by 1/3 since December 2007 when only 24 percent of respondents said they had. What I found p… Continue

Forget it's Microsoft -- the commercial itself is a wonderful way into a discussion about search and associative logic

I am not a fan of Microsoft, so I wouldn't normally have uncovered this commercial for Bing. But Jenna McWilliams (also not a Microsoft fan) blogged about it, so I took a look. It's short and funny, and if you ignore the bing.com promo at the end...you'll find it offers a very nice way in to a conversation about search, associative logic, human-speak and machine-speak, etc. I could see it working nicely with students to illustrate some abstract points. Yet another opportunity for Boston Area teachers

All this good stuff in Boston! :-) Anyway, if you are you a Boston-area middle or high school science teacher currently using technology in your classroom, NOVA would like your input to help shape its future resources. The 90-minute focus groups are being held after school hours on April 28 and 29th (middle school teachers) and May 7 and 8 (high school teachers) at WGBH in Boston. Participating teachers will receive a stipend. If interested, contact Karen Hartley at Karen_Hartley@wgbh.org, or 6… Continue

Great conference for folks who can get to Boston

Our friends at New Media Literacies have just opened registration or their May 2 teacher conference at MIT. If you can get to Boston (okay, technically Cambridge) for that day, you may enjoy it. And if you go, let us know and we'll try to let the NML people know you are NWPers. They will be interested to see who is there from the network. Here's the link: http://www.newmedialiteracies.org/. A photo that says it all!

This past weekend a small group of NWPers associated with Youth Voices & NYCWP and with Digital Paper & BAWP gathered in Berkeley for a drupal training with Bill Fitzgerald this past weekend. One of the participants, Madeline Brownstone, took a 'photo that says it all'. I think Tech Friends would especially appreciate the ironic juxtapositions of virtual and actual presence and of multimodal interactions as Chris Sloan and Sarah Sutter explore an idea together. Paul Allison posted the ph… Continue

New Ning to provide readers a place to share

There is a sort of person who has no particular interest in social networking spaces or opportunities per se but is really only concerned with doing, being, connecting around the thing they want to do, be, and connect with. (You may know such a person. Heck, you might BE such a person.) So, to provide some 'continuity opportunities' for teacher-consultants to network across sites and to give more people a reason to learn about online spaces for social networking that might be useful to t… Continue
