About Me:
I was our NH site's inaugural TL, 2002-2008. Though I'm giving a couple of talks at the summer institute and I'm still involved with a small number of projects, the PWP has a new TL this year, Erin Brown.

Let's see ... ask me something, I can talk about most things for a few minutes ... my research interests include emerging literacies and MMORPG. My banner image is from Second Life, but I haven't been there lately. I've been collecting data inside World of Warcraft, NationStates, and fiddling with some game creating projects. My research has grown into some very interesting projects and ideas for innovative games and more engaging methods of assessment. I'll look forward to sharing some of this with you in the years to come.

I'm excited to be joining the research community at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. I'm moving there. I'll be in a PhD program there for the next four years.

My contact information and some other things are on my website, Vidanto.com.

This is my first summer without a Writing Project summer institute for a while! There is, of course, a new TL at the Plymouth Writing Project in Plymouth, NH.

As you likely know, I live in Troy, NY (near Albany) where I'm a year in to my PhD program in Communication and Rhetoric at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute ... Rhetoric today has more to do with Human-Computer-Interaction, Visual Literacy, and so on than it does with Greek and Roman oratory. It's an interesting world. My thesis advisor i… Continue

Send your name to the Moon! For you and your students.

Earth's moon, like so many other things beyond our reach, can stimulate the imagination. I thought there might be a chance you would want to know about this, or to pass it along to someone you know. It could be part of a neat writing prompt.

Yes, NASA is going back to the moon, and you can go along for the ride for free. Sort of.

Here's the story from NASA, and I've put the links you'd need at the bottom.

Akwaaba! African Drumming and Dance in Manchester, NH

Hi again.

This isn't a teaching of writing story per se. It's only a tech-related story in that I built a web site in it, and only a tech liaison story in that I was the TL at the time, and engagement with the community is occasionally part of the work.

I'd like to introduce to my friend, Theo Martey, if you haven't met him already.Theo is the director of the Akwaaba Traditional African Drum and Dance Ensemble based in Manchester, NH.

Theo came to the US as a young man, much as I did. Of cour… Continue

PhD Application(s)

My application to enter a Ph.D. program at Rensselaer seems to be going well. The department of Language, Literature, and Communication voted unanimously to support my application for admission and to recommend I be considered for funding (a teaching or research assistantship or fellowship, which would pay for my education and give me a stipend to live on). I should know by mid-April whether that recommendation will be accepted by the higher-ups at RPI.

It’s a four year commitment. I'm excited… Continue

Job Seeking/Degree Program Search

I've been teaching at Plymouth State since 2001, and attended as a student, on and off, from 1988 to 2004. When the writing project chapter formed in 2002, it collected projects I'd already been working on for some years. All that is by way of preface -- my contract is up again in May, and I'll be moving on.

I wish I could spell out my future plans in detail, but I'm not there yet. I'm applying to graduate programs, want to pursue another degree (PhD, EdD, etc.) But my favorite work is… Continue

Hello Matt
I was thinking of you the other day because I read your last blog post and meant to come back to comment, and well, I forgot.
Sorry.
I hope all is well with you and your journey continues to move you forward.

Thanks for your input on whether I should go with Edublog or Ning for my classroom. I decided that since I had already spent so much time setting up my blog, I'd just go with that along with a Wikispaces site for more in-depth discussions. However, next year I will probably go with Ning--unless I finally figure out how to make my blog do what I want it to. Now if I can just convince some of my students they HAVE to participate in our online discussions. I thought since they all love Facebook and MySpace, I'd have no problem. Was I wrong! And, I've also been surprised at the trouble some of them have had in registering with Edublog. I thought they were more tech savvy that they appear to be.

Hope your year is going well. I'm still waiting on an internet drop for my classroom. I've threatened to run a lo-o-o-ng cord into the computer lab and plug into one of the drops in there. The computer teacher just laughed at me, but he might just be surprised one morning!

Take care.

If you would like a brief tour of Second Life, email me and we can schedule something. You may want to try to install the client first to be sure it'll work. I've been studying viral education among the "furry" a group of users who create avatars that look like anthropomorphic animals ... but I can put my Matt-looking-avatar back on, and we can look at a few interesting places. There is a whole listserv of educators who use SL, most of whom believe it is the greatest thing ever ... in my humble opinion, they range widely from good teachers to not so good, and the venue, SL, is very, very interesting but really just another tool to be used in combination with proven best practices, one with the usual pro's and con's. Hey, it is kind of fun, and it offers a lot of food for thought.

I really like your space and your images. They look fresh and inviting. As someone who spends lots of time trying to get images to "fit"...I really understand your comment about the TL graphic.

The banner looks great. I'd like to know how you did it.

So ... Paul Allison is one of my heroes, just an amazing achiever. Kevin & Troy always have such great things to talk about as well. And I should add the rest of you to my hero list too, given everything you do. Thanks.

Hi Matt,

Your SL pic in the banner has me interested... how often are you in world? Me, I created an avatar, and have spent a net total of about three hours there, so I am a newbie.

Good to reconnect with you through this network.
