A study from Britain by The National Literacy Trust looked at young writers and technology. It's worth a reading. One of the findings that stuck with me -- the idea (again) that writing outside of school is more meaningful to many young people than…

Advertisements and a Ning

I know a lot of folks are migrating to Nings for networks. Here is an interesting post by Wesley Fryer about advertising and Nings and the options you have to remove them -- through paying or through a CSS hack.

I would add one more option for users, too: Use Firefox and… Continue

The iAnthology Network

Greetings Tech Friends!

Since September, Bonnie Kaplan and I have been helping to nurture an online space that allows NWP fellows to continue or extend the experience of the NWP eAnthology beyond the summer months. We found that a lot of our teachers wanted to keep that online network of sharing and writing alive during the year and felt sad when it disappeared.
Thus, we created the experimental iAnthology network.
We have folks writing via weekly writing prompts, sharing poems and stories, and… Continue

Prezi rocks

(this is reposted from my blog)

I have heard about Prezi from a few folks and even ventured to the site once or twice, but I could not wrap my head around it. You know how it is: you have a concept of something (ie, presentations use powerpoint, which are a formal sequence of slides moving forward) and it is difficult to shake loose. Just imagine when w… Continue

All-Network Messages

I try not to overload anyone's email box with messages from Tech Friends. I am conscience of your time and focus. But Fred mentioned that he did not seem to be getting all-network messages and felt left out of some of the conversations. So, if you go into your settings (link on upper right) and then… Continue

Thanks, Kevin. I also really like the Myths vimeo by November and after watching it I saw one of yours on Dreams that was way cool. I love the art work. How were they made?

Thanks for the welcome. A NZ connection sounds strange I know - but I am from NC and a '91 participant of the SI at NCSU-CAWP. Ruie Pritchard, Director of CAWP, had a Fullbright to NZ in the 80s and after that started bringing Kiwis over for the writing project each summer. In 1991 I met - and eventually married one of these New Zealanders and have lived/worked in NZ for the last 12 years. My field is information and communication technology - and - in addition to doing some research with Ruie over the years - have served as one of two tech liaisons for the last 4 years - which has been great. I have really enjoyed being on the Tech Liaison ListServ too!

Oh my gosh Kevin, I had no idea about this writing project. There is one literally up the street from me at Cal State Northridge. Wow! A whole new world just opened up. LOL. How funny that I just stumbled upon your Ning. Thanks again!

Oh, sorry, now I understand what the question meant. LOL. My bad. No, no national writing project. Just my own. :) Thanks!

Thanks for the welcome, Kevin. I plan to be both cannibal and thief here, as in the U2 lyrics: "every poet is a cannibal, every artist is a thief" (or something like that); anyhow, substitute "teacher" and "tech liaison" and it would mean the same thing, right.

Oh, and I'll donate a bite of my own flesh to others as I can.

Thanks for the welcome, Kevin. And hat's off to Corey H. for turning a bunch of us at a NWP training onto this Ning. I'm looking forward to learning lots from this PLN.

Thanks for the welcone. I am very very happy to be a tech friend as I am definitely a digital immigrant. I need all the friends I can get.
